The history of Peterbilt dates back to 1939 when founder T.A. Peterman purchased Fageol Motors and renamed it Peterbilt Motors Company, or simply Peterbilt. The company started out manufacturing heavy-duty trucks and soon established a reputation for producing reliable vehicles that could handle tough terrain.
The first model – the “Chief” – was released in 1940 and featured a six-cylinder engine designed by General Motors, heavy-duty suspension, and large steel frame beds built to last for many years to come.
